An interesting historical fact adds a layer of mystery to these grand walls: the famous French author Victor Hugo lived in one of these very pavilions (Maison de Victor Hugo) for sixteen years, pacing under these exact vaulted stone arcades while writing his literary masterpiece, Les Misérables.
